Back to business

Today I got back to the usual YWAM DTS activities.

After Quiet Time, where I finished off reading the book "Spiritual Warfare for Every Christian", we continued our lecture series on Relationships. Today we looked at how infatuation happens, but that does not equal love, and how we can not depend on feelings, as they can change too. As a class we listed several things that love is (for example, the list in 1 Corinthians 13), and also discussed what it is not (i.e. loving up to a point, then letting your own agenda rule). We also looked at "The 5 Love Languages":
  • Words
  • Time
  • Thoughtful acts
  • Physical
  • Giving/receiving gifts
and one extra: Humour.

We went on to talking about dating relationships, how to approach them, and good ideas for what to do in them.

After that, we prayed for our outreaches - teams going to India praying for those going to Poland, and those going to Poland praying for those going to India. Some good news: everyone in Team India now has their visas except one person, so please continue praying for them!

After Community Care we had another meeting about our outreaches. Here we talked about the customs, dress, worldviews and other such matters in Indian society. It was quite informative.

After dinner (yay, I managed to keep it down!), them men's small group went to a local pub to meet and talk about relationships.

It has been a quite full and tiring day. I'm glad I'm back with everyone now though.

Bleugh!

After our first lectures on 'Relationships' we had lunch, then some of
the Team India group went to get our first injection.

Soon after the first injection I was sick. Then we went back to
Holmsted. There, I was sick again, and have spent the rest of the day
in bed. Please pray for me!

Fed, and fed again

Today I went back to my Portsmouth church in the morning. The sermon
was very good - about how choosing to follow Jesus is harder than some
people might make out, and you might have to face lions, just how some
early Christians had to face real lions.

After that I had lunch with my girlfriend and her parents. It was a
very nice afternoon.

Now I'm on the train back to Holmsted Manor, to start off one of the
last few weeks of the teaching phase of the YWAM DTS course.

I am so glad I chose to do this course. It has totally changed my
life, and I look forward to seeing even more changes to come.

I do like to be beside the sea side

Today we finished off our lecture series on Spiritual Warfare, had lunch, performed our Community Care duties, and were then released for our long weekend. I took the train down to Portsmouth to see my girlfriend and other friends for the next few days. It is good to be back for a while.

Gates

Today in the lecture we learned about gates. These were the part of a town where the important decisions were made. In our lives, there are gates in our mind, and corporate gates in government at every level. God wants to help us choose His way, but Satan wants to influence people to choose his way instead. Unfortunately in many governments, it is not God who's ways are followed.

After Community Care we had our weekly meeting to prepare for our trip to India. The good news is that my visa has come through, as has the visa for a British girl. However, the visas for the others on the trip have not yet come though yet, so if you could please pray for them to get their visas, that would be great. We also talked about our desires for the trip. I talked about how the caste system has been on my mind. It really isn't fair that some people get looked down on, just because of the family they were born in to. Also in this morning's lecture we looked at how God made us all equal. The caste system is a perversion of this idea. There is no need for it any more.

I need to get my own travel insurance and get several immunisations done for my trip. Please could you pray everything gets sorted quickly for those?

In the evening we had a ministry night, which started with a time of sung worship, then the lecturers prayed for each of us.

It has been another quick, but long day on the YWAM DTS course here at Holmsted Manor!

Our God is an awesome God

The Quiet Time today was led by one of the DTS leaders. He showed us a video of a drama performed at a church, which starts with a girl enjoying life with Jesus. Suddenly distractions-a boyfriend, addictions, self harm (all represented by other actors) - come in and start to destroy the girl's life. All the time, Jesus is trying to get to the girl - fighting to get her back again. Just because the girl was caught in the distractions and addictions, it didn't mean Jesus wanted to leave her, or love her any less. In the end, Jesus breaks past the crowd, and wins back the girl, defeating the enemy. It was quite good to watch and think about.

We had our usual Tuesday morning base prayer session next, where we prayed for the leaders of the base.

Today's lecture topic was "The nature and Character of God". If we are to be able to look at other aspects of spiritual warfare, we must first recognise the awesome nature of God. We saw how God is relevant: at all times, in all generations, in every context, in every culture, and in every change.

Even though there are changes in life, God is still relevant, and they are not a surprise to Him. We as the church should not get stuck in our ways, as God is relevant to the current culture, so should we. I now think back to something in Blue Like Jazz about a relevant church: it needs to preach the gospel, else it is not going to be relevant.

We also looked at God's origional intention, as shown in Genesis 1:27-28:

'So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth."'

It is all about relationships. God wants a relationship with us. That is why we have free will, so that we can choose to accept Him or not.

Getting rid of the Greek teaching was also talked about. The distinction between 'sacred' and 'secular' things should be done away with - God made everything, so there is no distinction.

Another important part of the class was on leadership. God wants us to rule, as shown in the verse, and that takes Selfless Service. If we look at leaders that just want the best for themselves, we think of them as dictators or tyrants. Jesus modeled a different type of leadership: He gave everything He could for His followers. He washed his disciples feet - th job of the lowest of the low servants, and He went to the cross to make a way back to God the Father. He walked in humility and had victory over the enemy.

We also looked at another verse that has come up quite a lot during the YWAM DTS course, John 10:10:

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."

Jesus came to give us the most amazing life we could imagine. He didn't promise it would be the easiest or most trouble free life (in fact, he said pretty much the opposite), but it is the life we are all called to - the life we were made for.

After lunch and Community Care, we had free time. Then in the evening we had small group. Today we got to watch a film, and we chose 'The Island', which reminded me a bit of the video we saw this morning.

Thanks for reading. Please feel free to add a comment to this or any other blog post.

This means war!

Today we started our lecture series on Spiritual Warfare. We concentrated on Ephesians 6:10-20, and the lecturer also talked about many concepts found in the book I'm reading at the moment: "Spiritual Warfare for every Christian". Basically, it is all about knowing who we are in Christ and living it out. Also recognising the Devil's tactics, refusing to co-operate with him, and cutting them off aggressively. We also saw how Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to his believers - a person, and an explosive power. We should be exploding God's love in to all situations, through the Holy Spirit.

After lunch and Community Care, we had a seminar on writing sermons. We will all have opportunities to preach while on outreach, so we have learnt a basic outline now which will help us in the future:
  1. Hook: something like a dance or drama, or a joke
  2. Book: the scripture you are preaching about
  3. Look: what does the scripture mean to you, and give personal testimony related to change due to that scripture
  4. Took: how can the listeners apply the message to their own life
We were then given 10 minutes to come up with a 10 minute sermon. I did mine on Matthew 27:51:

And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.

I talked about how through Jesus death, the way to God the Father was opened up to anyone - we do not have to rely on anyone else to get to God any more.

We had dinner and free time after that, which was nice.
