Church/pizza/football/curry

Today I went to The Point, a church in Burgess Hill, which was nice as I got to see some people I know from the area. Also the worship and teaching (on worship), was pretty good too.

Then we had pizza for lunch. We normally have a full Sunday roast dinner, but we had that last night instead.

A little while after that I was goalie in another football match. It was a bit wet outside, but we had fun anyway.

This evening the team going to India had a meal together and talked about what to bring, and cultural expectations in India. It seems I should be ok just being myself, which is good!

More rest

Today, I rested. First I got out of bed at about mid day, then I read for a bit, then got some lunch. Then I read for a bit more and worked on this week's journal entry. Then I had dinner, and watched a film with others here at Holmsted (How to loose a girl in 10 days).

It was a very nice, restful day. Just what I needed after this last week.

Camera not shy

After a time of sung worship led by another triplet, we continued our time of sharing in the group anything that we felt we should. I told a story about something that happened last night: during one of the exercises we did, I felt God was saying I had to travel with my partner in the exercise to Holland (I knew he was going there in a week), this seemed a bit odd though, but I considered what it meant, and eventually felt that I should offer him my camera to take on the trip. This would be to help me trust other people with 'my' belongings. He said yes, and it turned out that he was actually going to ask me if he could borrow my camera for the trip anyway!

After the time of sharing with each other we prayed for each other, then went to lunch, and then did our Community Care duties.

This evening I went out for our penultimate trip to the homeless project in Brighton. It was a bit odd tonight: we met about 8 people, most of whom just wanted us to move so they could carry on begging!

This has been a fantastic week overall. My angel has blessed me with many wonderful gifts and encouragements, and the lecture times have been full of the Holy Spirit - God talking to me. I'll be glad for another rest on the weekend though!

Found in Christ

Today was quite a special day.

In the lecture, the Holy Spirit led the speaker away from her notes on what to teach us, and on to taking a journey together. A journey of revelation and forgiveness. We each had an opportunity to confess to the group anything we felt we had to. It wasn't awkward or forced, it was naturally flowing from the desire of us as the group.

In the evening the speaker led us through several exercises to help us in what I would call "kinetic prophecy" - we had to do things, and they spoke in to our lives.

It was all rather personal though, so I don't want to say too much here. All I know is, my life is in Christ, and He will lead me on.

Sex!

Today's lecture topic was sexual sin. We started off with a discussion
about how we can recognise when God is talking to us. Some key ideas
were given to us: first, if the thought would harm us, it wouldn't be
from God. Second, if the thought would harm someone else, it wouldn't
be from God. Third, if the thought is contrary to God's word in the
Bible, then it wouldn't be from God.

Some other thoughts we covered: we shouldn't use our feelings as a
basis of our actions. Our feelings can lie to us. God does not. Also,
we often try to rationalise or bargain God out of our lives.

The story was told of a YWAMer who was in a shopping mall, and thought
he heard God saying to go over to a vending machine and stand on his
head. This seemed odd, but it wouldn't hurt him or anyone else, and it
wasn't illegal, so he went and did it. It turned out there was another
man in the mall who was struggling with faith in God, and told God if
He got someone to stand on their head next to the vending machine,
then he would believe in God. And so, sometimes we have odd thoughts,
but just because they are odd, doesn't mean they are not from God.
Also, just because we think a thought is a "normal" or natural
thought, it doesn't mean it wasn't from God. The phrase the teacher
has used is "being naturally supernatural".

Some important lessons from the rest of the talk were: Learn to
correct mistakes before they become problems; the most powerful thing
we have when bad things happen to us is how we respond (this is
something that came up in my Bible reading notes yesterday. This keeps
on happening!); we get the grace to act in a situation when we need
it, not before; keep your eyes on the healer, not the healing; God may
break us because of our pride and stubbornness, not to keep us broken
- but to make us in to the people we are meant to be; our ministry
will reflect our character; fear of the Lord is hatred of sin.

We also talked a bit about the occult, and how harmful it is to open
ourselves up to such things. Anything that is used to try to
supernaturally reveal something about out past, present or future
without God (for example, horoscopes), is a form of control, and puts
us in a place of danger, open to things that we should not be.

After Community Care, the team going to India went in to Haywards
Heath, to Starbucks to have a chat about our arrangements. We will be
leaving on the 11th of December, and arrive on the 12th. We will be
back about the same time in February. We talked about the different
roles we will be responsible for while there. I will be responsible
for keeping track of the accounts.

Once we got back, we enjoyed the German themed meal, and then I had my
one to one meeting, which was nice.

Back to the future

Today's lecture started off with a discussion on assumptions. We often assume things about people that will affect how we see them. First, we need to test out our assumptions by asking questions. It isn't until we hear someone speaking about something that we can know what they really think about it.

We then went on to talk about the story of Jesus and Zacchaeus in Luke 19: Jesus looks at each one of us, and sees the part that He made, and wants to connect with us, no matter how far away we are from him. We need to accept others, and draw them close to Christ.

It was pointed out that we quite often limit God, or ourselves. We don't need to accept limits on what God can do - or what we can do through Him. The life I may have thought I was going to have before this course is not the one I'm destined for now.

Then we moved on to thinking about what it was that meant Jesus was sinless. We concluded by discussing how he had a perfect relationship with his Father in Heaven, and always did His will. The essence of everything is in the relationships, not necessarily behaviour.

We finally moved on to the topic of Sin, and how we can easily, but shouldn't, let a sin become routine and place us under bondage to them. The issue of the first sin came up. The issue was: could Adam let God determine what was best for him. As he decided he could determine what was best for him, we now inherit a disposition to turn the same way - to have pride and Independence in our lives. Jesus came to provide the one true way back to the Father and forgiveness for being proud and/or in dependant.

After lunch, I watched Back to the Future 1 and 2, as my angel did my Community Care duties for me!

In Small Group this evening, we discussed what we thought of the conference, and prayed for each other.

It has been another nice day, where I have defiantly felt God speaking - in the lectures, and also in this films I saw.

Last week at the conference I managed to get a few more photos online, view my photos online.

Thanks for reading. Please feel free to add a comment to this, or any other blog entry.

Heaven sent

Today we started our new lecture serise on 'Sin and repentance'. This I looking like it is going to be an interesting week indeed. The speaker is nice, ad is explaining what she is talking about well as we go along. She started off talking about how we should test everything she says, and how she may contradict what other speakers say, but that is ok. She then went on to talk about how when we meet new people, like her, we have a checklist of criteria we use to judge them in our minds. She also talked about how we often put God in a box, and try to keep Him segmented off from other areas of our life. It is like our lives are mazes with doors on corners, and we try to stop God from having access to certain parts, eg relationships, finances or hobbies. We also discussed how God is truth, light and most importantly, fellowship, and we should not walk in darkness, the shadows, sin or reserves (holding things back from people). We also discussed the nature of the trinity, and how when praying we often confuse who we are speaking to 'Father! Thank you Jesus for sending the Holy Spirit', for example. I really felt God speaking to me through what was said today.

After lunch we took part in our usual Community Care duties. These took a little longer than usual as there was a bit more cleaning to do given the toilets have not been cleaned for the week we were at the conference!

After Community Care, we had another seminar. This was about 'The Apostolic Anointing'. Simply put, and Apostle is a believer who is sent with purpose - pioneering new things for the sake of the Gospel. The are very much akin to missionaries. They take on parts of the roles of the others in church: prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers. If the church was a car, the apostle would be at the driving seat, and the others would be the wheels.

In both the lectures and the seminar, a lot was said about safety. What it comes down to is that we need to stop trying to make ourselves safe, and rely on the type of safety that God gives us instead. We heard a quote that goes something like this: 'the most dangerous way to live is playing it safe', by John Ottberg, and another: 'There is no security in what God asks us to do. There is only security in who God is', I think said by a friend of the base leader who gave the seminar. It is quite an important lesson. God is faithful in character. Even if circumstances don't look that way, He is working in the light of eternity.

This week is an 'Angels and mortals' week, where we have each been randomly assigned a name of someone (staff or student) on this YWAM DTS course. They are our mortal, and we are their angel. We have to leave them little gifts each day to give them an uplifted spirit for the week. I won't say what I've given, just in case my mortal happens to be reading this. I got some sweets with an encouraging Bible verse attached, Ephesians 1:7:

"In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace"

Which was nice.

It has been odd coming back here after the conference. It was only a week, but it seems like a lot longer. I've managed to pick up a cold, so if you pray, please ask for good health (and for the others here suffering). Also our visas for India are being submitted this week, so please pray they get accepted!

Thanks for reading. Please feel free to add a comment to this or any other post.

Another nice day

I spent most of today with my girlfriend again. She eventually made it
to Holmsted Manor to meet the other DTS students, which was nice.

Home, and home again

Today we heard a couple more talks at the conference, enjoyed some
fantastic home-made burgers, then spent several hours in the minibus
traveling back to Holmsted Manor.

Once I arrived, I had some dinner, and enjoyed one of the many fires,
and waited for my Mum to pick me up for the night. I'll be pleased to
get into a real bed having spent the last week on the floor of a hall
we were staying at during the conference. It was fine for a week, but
one couldn't live there!

I hope you have had a great week, and will have a great weekend. This
week has been fantastic for me. I'vw learned so much from the key
leaders in YWAM, and got to meet more great people too.
